Description

Kyon, Real Name unknown and alias John Smith, is the protagonist of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzmiya. As a kid Kyon dreamed of being the hero in a sci-fi comic fighting evil and the supernatural, but he grew out of it as he grew up. In high school he manages to befriend Haruhi Suzumiya, an eccentric girl who unbeknownst to her, as the power to alter reality by will. He ends up getting 'dragged along' by her on her adventures of building a school club, the other members of which are 'people' who's job it is to watch her because of her powers either because of the threat or to investigate. As the only person with a real emotional connection to Haruhi he ends up the most valuable asset of the people watching her becomes without realizing it the hero he had dreamed about being as a kid ending up in dangerous and strange situations involving the supernatural. Kyon for the entirety of the anime refers to himself as normal and feigns distress over his adventures until the finale. He does however in the end take his place as a hero.

I had previously cast Logan Lerman in this role, in this role playing up Kyon's normal human attributes, but i wanted to try and cast someone on a different rationale than my first pick, so this pick is playing on Kyon's status as the hero who ends up in dangerous situations, so with that i wanted to cast Charlie Heaton, who starred as Jonathan Byers in Stranger Things, where he demonstrated his skills at playing a badass who gets involved in strange happenings, and as someone who's a compelling hero. Charlie wouldn't be lacking either with Kyon's status as "normal" he seems a very down to earth guy and despite his appearance he can do normal easily.
